The First Global Exchange Alumni Newsletter- Dec. 2003

Dear Everyone:

I hope that this newsletter finds you all doing well.
It has been our wish for long time to create a vehicle or platform to connect everyone who has been learned Chinese and Chinese Cultural in our center better after you left Beijing. Ultimately, the goal is to create more and long term values to all of our alumni.

Now I am sending you the first issue of Global Exchange Alumni Newsletter and I hope that you like it and agree our objective so you also like to participate in the future.

We need you input, your ideas and your feedback to make better one in the future. This is a platform for everyone so I hope that all of you find time and way to participate in the way you like. Please send your suggestion, new ideas and comments to any time.

Currently, we plan to publish this alumni Newsletter every three months. We are going to send you simplified version by email. The Newsletter will also be published on our website with more photos and detailed information. We are going to send newly updated alumni directory by email only. For private protection reason, we do not publish directory on website. If some of you even do not want to have your contact information included in email directory, please inform us.

From next issue, Lisa Li is going to be the key person to work and coordinate this newsletter. Lisa is our full time Chinese teacher and she joined us at beginning of this year. Someone who studied with us earlier might not meet her, but you are going to know her in the future.

News from Global Exchange Center:
* 2003-a very difficult year: it has bee very tough year for us due to SARS and slowdown of international travel since then. But we have survived and the situation is improving. We use this special time to develop new programs and enhance our marketing.
* New logo: this year, we formally select our logo. It was designed by Com Media Development Group Inc. We already use it on business cars, company letter and signs. We have not integrate it on our website.
* Our center has invited Mrs. LaiWah Chow as our honorable advisor.
Mrs. LaiWah Chow works in management position on Robinson Club Lyttos Beach that is Greece based Tour operator. She has a lot of experiences in tour business and is able to speak 5 languages ( I am not counting Chinese and she is working hard on it). She has give us advises on our marketing and made a lot of contribution on improving our English writing in our materials.
* New way to give tests: when you complete study: most of you may remember that we gave you a page of paper as test when you finished your study with us. We started to use video taped presentation as test from November this year. So we want to hear your Chinese and remember how you talk, a lot of fun.
* Chinese Business Internship Program in 2004
We are going to promote more for this program in 2004. It is the combination of Chinese language study, Chinese business training and work internship in Beijing. It is great opportunity to learn Chinese business and society in real life environment.
* Alumni Returning and referring policy: we offer 15 % discount for all alumni who come back to study with us again. We also offer 15% commission to our alumni who referring their friends to book our program.

* Sue came back to visit Beijing:
Sue has studies and stayed in a host family in Beijing from Recently she revisit Beijing during a self guided tour inYunnan and Beijing and I am glad to meet her and invite her for Beijing Hot Pot lunch. She does her consulting in UK and she is interested in work opportunities in China as an editor or English teaher.

Mini Chinese Cultural Lesson:
"Chinese Lunar New Year" is the most important holiday in China. It may in late of January or early February. In 2004, Chinese New Year's Day is on Januery 22.

In New Year's Eve. Most of the Chinese families eat jiaozi (dumpling) at 12 o'clock. That means people will have enough food for the following year. Many of them do not sleep all night, they may play games like Majiang, or watch TV. It is also custom to have the fireworks, to hang up the red lantern and so on. Most people may stay home for family gethering on the first day of the new year, and go to visiting close relatives since the second. These days, there are many new cultural events in the parks in Beijng. People may enjoy different Chinese foods, watch acrobitics shows, talk shows or other entertainments there.

This year (2003) is the year of "Sheep", so next year (2004) would be the year of "monkey"
