The First Global Exchange Alumni Newsletter- Dec. 2003

News from Alumni:

From Andres Forero ( he was in Beijing in July, 2001)
Hi Michael:
Nice to hear from you. Sorry I have not been able to answer you but I am
totally swamped with work. I start working at 8 am and finish and 11 pm.
Everyday. Weekends included.

I send you 4 pictures of and my girlfriend of when we did 1 year of being together and I took her a serenata, some Mexican musicians to sing her love songs.
Andres with his girl friend, Brazil

(His background) I am colombian, lived and worked in the USA, I was sent
to Brazil 6 years ago to set up the Latin American branch of the USA
company, worked 4 years here then left to start my own company helping
foreign companies to establish in Brazil and now I am setting up the branch
in Brazil of a USA telecommunications company, with which I stay incredibly
busy without time for anything else.

I love China - and Chinese ladies- and after going to China I am 100% sure
it will be the next superpower of the world, just as it was with Gengis Khan.

I loved my time in China and especially the time at Global Exchange and I
very much reccomend the experience to anyone.

Sven (Petermann) who wrote comments before his leaving Beijing and he started his study with us in July 2002 then He has worked in an Austrian firm then in internation headhunter firm. Here are some of his comments:

Partial Quotation of prior email:
"Hi!
It was a tough decision to go back to Germany. The career perspectives for foreigners in China, not talking about Expats sent by their company, are very limited. Even with excellent Chinese language skills and many years of work experience in China (what I both do not have...) it is almost impossible to get a good position with career perspectives. The need for foreign managers is decreasing dramatically as foreign companies are going to replace their foreign workforce with locals.

It was always my wish to work in China again after I first came here in 1998 for an internship during my studies. All the excitement of staying in this wonderful country has become normal after one year. I am still highly fascinated by this country and its wonderful people. Nevertheless, in the last weeks I have asked myself how my future in China will look like. I told you the options above...

It is not easy to leave but there is a plan in my head that I will be back in about two years.

From Another Sven (Wegert): (He was in Beijing in September 2002)

Hi Michael
I made a trek tour through East U.S.A. in August / September which started in New York and finished in Miami. That was a great adventure tour with a lot of nice and funny guys from England, Scotland and Ireland. It was for four weeks and we camped on several camping grounds, travelled also to New Orleans and met Boris Becker in a pizza store.

Back home I started a program for preparing my exam ( I study law ). This program lasts one year and is leaded by three experienced lawyers who teach me and circa 80 other students, so that we'll be well prepared next year. It's a lot of work but the lawyers do a very good job and I think this course is very worthful for me.

I like to stay in contact with you, too, so it's a nice idea to organize sth.. like a newsletter. I still have the idea of coming back if possible but I don't know when I'll have my next vacation...

LOVELY GREETINGS FROM BOCHUM,
SVEN (October 16 2003 from Germany)

Rikkya (She was in Beijing April 2001)
How are you? And how is business going? I guess now that the SARS crisis is
over you will have plenty of students again...
As for me... I found a job after returning in China and I'm working and
living in Singapore right now. I work at the university as a research
engineer. I never quite expected it, but my few sentences of Chinese come in
pretty handy now. Some of my collegues are Chinese (as in mainland chinese,
others are Singaporean chinese) and they try to teach me a bit more. But as
always, I'm a lazy student ;) I'll definitely try to get back to Beijing one
of these days, and I'll visit you all for sure! In the mean time, tell Li
laoshi and Rosemary that I'm practising my mahjong skills...

Yulia (She was was in Beijing from September 2002)
Hi, Michael!

I am fine, but I miss Beijing and hope one day I ll come back.

As you know, I am studying in my university now, I study Chinese economy, literature, English and of course Chinese. After my trip in Beijing, I do it easier, because my Chinese pronunciation is better then earlier, and of course I improved my English skills. I think that I am the best in my English group, and one of the best students in my Chinese group.

Some day ago I passed my Chinese exam and I have got an excellent mark! I can thank my teachers Rosemary and Limei. But the rest of my life is just a normal life of a student. After my classes I go to a gym three times a week. And also I meet with my friends, go to see movies, to walk. But my city is a small city, not like Beijing and we don t have a lot of places to go out (like Sanlitun) :-) But we have forest everywhere. And I can breath fresh air. The weather is getting colder, about 10 degrees in day and 3-5 at night. And a very strong wind is blowing the last few days. So for me it s cold.
I have sent you some pictures with me and my city.
Buy!!!!
