Tsinghua is often ranked as the first or second best university in mainland China in many national and international rankings
It was established in 1911 under the name "Tsinghua Xuetang" or "Tsinghua College" and was renamed the "Tsinghua School" one year later. In 1952, the Chinese government regrouped the country's higher education institutions with individual institutions tending to specialize in a certain field of study. In many years following this regroup, the school was commonly referred to as the "MIT of China". But since the 1980s, the university began to
incorporate a multidisciplinary system. As a result, several schools were re-incorporated. These included the School of Sciences, School of Business and Management, School of Humanities and Social Sciences, Tsinghua Law School, School of Public Policy and Management, and the Academy of Arts and Design.
Since China opened up to the world in 1978, Tsinghua University has developed at a breathtaking pace into a comprehensive research university. At present, the university has 14 schools and 56 departments with faculties in science, engineering, humanities, law, medicine, history, philosophy, economics, management, education and art. As one of China’s most renowned universities, Tsinghua has become an important institution for fostering talent and scientific research.
In the academic year 2011-2012, Tsinghua University will offer 37 Bachelor’s degree programs, 94 Master’s degree programs and 65 doctoral degree programs to the international students. In particular, ten of the Master programs and one of the doctoral programs are delivered in English.
Tsinghua University also offers non-degree programs such as Chinese language study, and short-term/summer programs to the international students. See more on Global Exchange University Placement Service.
