Global Exchange Center - Overseas Connections Essay Competition, Fall 2008

Interested in China?
Thinking about traveling or spending some time here?
Want to have your writing featured on our website and make some money?

The Global Exchange Center, a Beijing based educational services organization, is looking for writers interested in sharing their perspectives on China! We are offering a new opportunity for college and graduate students to tell us their thoughts about the unique opportunities presented by cross cultural business and communication.

Since our center seeks to facilitate connections with China for business pursuits, study, or simply personal enjoyment, you may choose to discuss any of the three in your essay. Essays should be clear and articulate with thoughtful subject matter emphasizing your own personal experience or perspective. Please note, entries from writers who have visited China will not receive more favor than those who have not. While a general familiarity of China is a plus, essays will primarily be judged by the quality of their writing and content.

Three essays will be chosen. All winners will receive a cash prize and a Global Exchange voucher redeemable through any of our services. The top three essays will be featured on our website.

1st Place: $100 in cash and a $500 voucher
2nd Place: $50 in cash and a $300 voucher
3rd Place: $35 in cash and a $200 voucher

Vouchers expire after 3 years and may be transferred to others.

Topic 1
With the abundance of exposure provided by books and media, it is quite easy to watch China from a distance. Do you feel like having an opportunity to visit China would teach you more? Where would go and why?

Topic 2
China's unique culture and circumstances often create a unique environment for doing business. What specific area of business are you interested in? Does pursuing this field in China appeal to you more so than in other countries?

Topic 3
What do you feel are the most significant challenges and opportunities that small and medium sized American businesses face when utilizing the resources and market opportunities present in modern China?

ELIGIBILITY
Our essay competition is open to all current undergraduate and graduate students, and recent students who received their degree since the spring of 2005. All fields of study are eligible. Personal experience in China is not a condition for eligibility.

ESSAY GUIDELINES:
Essays should be between 1000-1500 words. We are looking for people to express their personal perspectives. These can be based on either casual interest in China or relevant experience gained through work, travel or study. We encourage anyone to write and apply. Essays will be judged by Chinese and Western staff members.
